π Facebook is changing
Whatβs new?
Zuck & Meta announced a significant change to the Facebook app. With the introduction of βHomeβ, Facebook users are now getting a TikTok-style discovery feed supercharged by the endless amounts of data Facebook has been gathering on their users over the years.
Confusingly, the feed where you can check out all posts of creators (and maybe the occasional person from your IRL network) has been labeled βFeedsβ. Feeds will apparently not be ruled by a discovery algorithm, and only show you content from accounts you follow.
Pros and Cons
As content producers for brands, we do see this as a positive signal. Thanks to TikTokβs open algorithm, the brands we work with have been able to organically reach many more people compared to what would have been traditionally possible on the Instagram and Facebook of the old days. In any event, there are exciting times ahead of us, and we expect many more tweaks and improvements to Facebookβs and IGβs algorithms in the upcoming months.
Many news outlets are saying that this change marks the de-facto end of the social aspect in social media, since it seems like Meta no longer sees the relevance of people using their platforms to connect and share moments together online as coherent social groups [1, 2, 3, 4].
But why? And why now?
These changes are of course financially driven. Meta has been feeling the pressure from TikTok for quite a while now and the outlook of a potential global recession always tends to take a toll on ad budgets rather quickly.
The New York Times posted an interesting write-up on the motivating factors behind Zuckβs latest strategic move. The Verge also neatly condenses many explanations in their report on Facebookβs Q2 quarterly report this Wednesday.
